Songgang Art Museum, a private first-class art museum located at 240-10 Isongcheon-gil, Seohu-myeon, Andong, Gyeongbuk, opened in June 2023 after remodeling the former Songgang Elementary School, which closed in 1995. The result of more than 20 years of preparation by Daeshin General Construction chairman Jeong Hae-ryong and poet and director Kim Myeong-ja, it was registered just four months after opening as Andong's first and Gyeongbuk's 11th first-class art museum, gaining recognition for both professionalism and public value.
Its four exhibition halls, created by preserving the structure of the old school building, host permanent and special exhibitions spanning painting, sculpture, installation, and photography, while a separate building houses the Andong Literature Museum, the Hahoe Mask Exhibition Hall, and the cafe Russell, forming a cultural complex where viewing, rest, and experience come together in one place. Like the symbolic Samjogo sculpture in the lobby, its exhibition content is characterized by reinterpreting traditional narratives with modern formative beauty.
Since opening, it has successively presented exchange exhibitions of local and overseas artists such as Perhaps Everything Is Memory and Engraving Flowers on a Thousand Rivers, and through participatory programs such as children's art classes, poetry readings, and calligraphy workshops it has become a local cultural hub visited by thousands each year. Going forward, Songgang Art Museum plans to continue its founding vision of an art school in nature by expanding artist residencies and collaborative exhibitions with local universities and institutions.
